New Aircrafts for SYFC

ASPIRING pilots at the Singapore Youth Flying Club (SYFC) will soon take to the skies in shiny new aircraft.

The club's 14 existing training aircraft, many already 20 years old, will be replaced in this major fleet overhaul, operations manager Willie Chow told The Straits Times.

SYFC is close to sealing a deal for 13 four-seater Diamond DA40s, he said. The aircraft would cost about US$3.4 million (S$4.8 million) in total at published prices.

The new aircraft should start arriving in the next few months.

Mr Chow said: 'This is our first major fleet replacement exercise in about two decades. Our trainer aircraft are put through extensive flying and they are getting old, so it is about time we retired them and gave our students more technologically advanced machines.'

Located in Seletar Aerospace Park, SYFC is one of three flying schools here, the other two being the Republic of Singapore Flying Club and Seletar Flying Club.

SYFC is the only one that caters solely to students. It admits Singapore citizens who are aged at least 16 and in junior colleges, polytechnics or schools offering the International Baccalaureate and Integrated programmes.

Students pay a nominal one-time fee of about $50 for books and other materials. It usually takes about a year's worth of lessons several times a week to obtain a private pilot's licence (PPL).

The club, funded mainly by the Ministry of Defence, opened in 1971 and to date, has trained more than 4,000 pilots. A good number of SYFC graduates go on to become Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) or commercial pilots, said Mr Chow.

About 80 students are now pursuing their wings.

It is a month shy of a year since Nigel Wong, 17, started flying lessons; he has about two months to go before he gets his PPL.

Said the first-year science student at St Andrew's Junior College: 'I have always been interested in flying and intend to pursue a career in it. For me, joining the club is an important stepping stone to the RSAF.'

Apart from teaching youths how to fly, the SYFC runs a four-year aeromodelling programme as a co-curricular activity in secondary schools. The tie-up with the Education Ministry has already attracted 17 schools and about 800 students.

Those who enrol are taught the theory of aerodynamics through the building of planes using foam and balsa wood. They also get to fly these planes using wireless remote control.

Mr Chow said: 'We are not a commercial organisation. Our role is to train young people who are interested in flying, not just as a hobby but as a career.'

With new aircraft coming in, the club expects to attract even more students, he said.
Nigel said: 'It is a shame I will not be here when the new trainers come, but it is definitely good news for future graduates.'

New Air Force Chief to Take Over in December

Brigadier-General (BG) Ng Chee Meng will take over from Major-General (MG) Ng Chee Khern as Chief of Air Force on 10 December 2009.

BG Ng Chee Meng, who is currently Deputy Chief of Air Force, joined the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) in December 1986. He holds a Bachelor of Science (Electrical Engineering) from the US Air Force Academy, USA, and a Master of Arts (International Relations) from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, USA. His previous appointments in the SAF include Commanding Officer of the Republic of Singapore Force's (RSAF's) 144th Squadron; Head of Air Plans Department; Commander of Changi Air Base; and Director of Joint Operations.

MG Ng Chee Khern started his military career in 1984, and has served the SAF with distinction. As Chief of Air Force from 24 March 2006, MG Ng led the most fundamental restructuring of the RSAF since its inception, with wide-ranging changes in the RSAF's organisational structure, and the development of its capability and people. As part of the 3rd Generation Air Force transformation, MG Ng oversaw the introduction of key capabilities such as the F15-SG fighter aircraft and G550-Airborne Early Warning aircraft. In defence diplomacy, MG Ng forged close working relations between the RSAF and air forces around the world. MG Ng, who is an SAF (Overseas) and President's scholar, will be returning to the Administrative Service.

The Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) wishes to express its deep appreciation to MG Ng Chee Khern for his contributions to MINDEF and the SAF.

SAF Medical Team Dispatched to Indonesia

A 54-strong medical team from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) was dispatched this afternoon in four Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) C-130 aircraft to Indonesia, to provide medical aid to victims of the earthquake which hit West Sumatra on 30 Sep 09. Upon arrival, the SAF Medical Team immediately proceeded to Pariaman to set up their medical facility. Pariaman, a coastal town 50km north of Padang, is identified to be closest to the epicentre.

Led by LTC (DR) Mohamad Rosman, the SAF Medical Team, comprising orthopaedic and general surgeons, anaesthetists, medics and nurses, will provide primary healthcare and perform surgery. The team also includes three doctors and four nurses from the Ministry of Health (MOH). The SAF Medical Team will be working closely with the Indonesian National Defence Forces (TNI) and authorities, as well as international and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to administer medical assistance to those affected by the earthquake.

On 2 Oct 09, two RSAF C-130s flew a 42-member Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) team to Padang, Indonesia, to help in the rescue operations. Another RSAF C-130 also transported US$50,000 worth of tentages, blankets, and medical supplies for the earthquake victims in Padang.

A piece of good news.

Our Hua Yi Pilot, Lim Xue Jun had invent a new model out and had been test fly. The result show that is flown well. Plan will be released when xue jun given permission. But the model is same as sotong plane. But is just make by plastic.

Finally, we have done first part of our open house..our first part is sucess in flying..right now is just waiting for our second part to sucess..our aim is 10 students and above..!!

My sec one junior- Neville Lim Zhan Hong, got the confident of having First Flight Solo Without Flying Aircrafts for gas powered..!

Guys, build more planes for your own-self..and done every thing, go displays your plane next year of open house..

oh today our cca blog change new skin le & update some of the information le
but still need to improve on everydae post
today Wei Jie, Xue Jun, Jasmine, Alister,Ying cong ,Zhan hong & ke wei went to school for cca
fixing planes and test flight .Wonder why our school planes can't fly ???Everytime flying training also the same .Hope our school planes can fly one day.Today Jasmine took lots of photos waiting to put on notice broad that was to surprise mr chen before wed as he going to leave the soon .
